Single-Parent Travel: Enjoy the Journey Without the Stress

If you’ve shepherded any number of kids through an airport, you know family travel is part logistics puzzle, part snack management. And when you’re the only adult on the trip, you juggle both — along with the passports, the sunscreen, the dinner decisions and the inevitable question: “What are we doing next?”

Ciao Bambino travel advisor Lucinda Kemmet understands all of this to a T, personally and professionally. As both a single mother and an expert family travel planner, Lucinda has designed trips for single parents and experienced one-on-one adventures with her own children in Ireland, Italy, Thailand and Laos.

Her perspective on solo-parent travel is shaped by more than itinerary know-how. “There’s no ‘right-size’ family,” Lucinda says. “There’s no perfect family that shows up with a mom and a dad and two kids. Helping people realize that they’re not the oddball out is important to me.”

Single Parent Travel 101: Expert Advice and Ideas

Single parents, as well as those planning one-on-one trips with a son or daughter, don’t need a special side door into family travel. Instead, they simply need thoughtful planning and excellent resources.

“You have all the same options [as families traveling with more than one adult], and we’ll help you work through what the best options are for you,” Lucinda says. With expert planning behind the scenes, single-parent travel can feel less like a test of endurance and more like what it should be: a meaningful and memorable way to see the world with your children.

Start with Big Dreams, Not Smaller Expectations

Resist the urge to begin by asking, “What can I handle?” Instead, consider the places and excursions that spark excitement for you and your kid(s). Is it a beach resort with beautiful pools and a kids’ club that gives everyone breathing room? Would you prefer a city stay with museums and food tours or an off-grid adventure with hiking and wildlife encounters? With the right support and planning, you don’t have to settle for a watered-down version of a dream vacation.

Choose Places Where Kids Are Celebrated

For single parents, the right hotel or resort can shape the entire experience. The goal is not simply to find a property that allows children, but to find places where children are genuinely welcomed by the staff. “As travel advisors, we know firsthand about places that are beyond kid-friendly — they are kids-celebrated,” says Lucinda. Properties with top-notch kids’ clubs, childcare or supervised activities give kids a chance to have their own fun while the parent gets a little solo time.

Make the Logistics Feel Effortless

Some travel upgrades are glamorous, while others are sanity-saving. Prearranged transportation falls firmly into the second category. After a long flight, there is enormous value in skipping the taxi and ride-share lines. “People will say, ‘Is it going to be cheaper if we just take a taxi?’ And yes, it’s always going to be cheaper if you just take a taxi, but you have to find a taxi and worry about that. It’s worth it to have someone standing there with a sign with your name on it,” Lucinda says.

With a prearranged car service, you avoid juggling tired kids, luggage and directions while trying to make the first decision of the trip. This kind of planning removes a major pressure point, especially when there’s no second adult to watch the bags, entertain the kids or troubleshoot the route. A smooth arrival sets the tone for the entire trip.

Build in Real-Time Support

Even the best-planned vacations can have hiccups. A room is not what was promised. Breakfast is not included when it should be. A tour time changes. A transfer needs adjusting. These things happen, and they are much easier to solve when someone knowledgeable is already in your corner.

In anticipation of such road bumps, Lucinda coordinates with full-service local partners when curating family trips. “That way, you will have a dedicated contact in the country where you are,” she says. “You can message them with questions on WhatsApp anytime. You have a person there who’s looking out for you.” For single parents and solo-parent travelers, that extra layer of support can be invaluable.

Create Connections with Guides and Small Groups

A good guide can make a destination interesting; a great family guide can make it unforgettable. Parents often worry that their children will not pay attention during a tour, especially if the subject matter sounds more adult than kid-friendly. “I was that parent,” Lucinda says. “I get it.”

However, the right guide knows how to read the room, adjust the pace and connect with kids and teens in ways that make a destination come alive. “Something that’s really special [about the Ciao Bambino team] is the relationships we’ve developed with tour guides around the world,” Lucinda says. “They really and truly love kids.”

Small group tours offer travelers a little built-in community. For instance, during a boat trip near Koh Samui, Lucinda’s son Ty connected with another boy in the group, even though they did not speak the same language. “They played video games together on the boat,” she says. “When we got to the final stop where we could go kayaking through some caves, Ty went with his new friend, and I just got my own kayak. It was so wonderful.”

That moment captures the magic of the right travel experience: kids building confidence, parents getting to enjoy the moment and everyone coming home with a story.

Give Kids a Special Role in the Trip

Single-parent travel can create a strong sense of teamwork between parent and child. One way to build on that is to encourage your son or daughter’s sense of ownership in the travel experience.

A longtime client of Ciao Bambino advisor Alex Carrier shared that her son is the photographer on every trip. It’s a leading role for him that allows her to see the vacation through his eyes. Maybe your child is the official navigator, restaurant reviewer, museum critic or gelato judge!

No matter the scope of the trip, single parents don’t have to view travel as a challenge they might barely pull off. Dream vacations are within reach for families of every sort and size — and with the right planning, the experience can feel every bit as joyful as it is memorable.
