Located along the shores of Lake Como in the charming fishing village of Lezzeno, Palazzo Del Vice Re is a new gem for families who want an authentic Italian holiday on Italy’s most celebrated lake. This former palace has been beautifully restored into a unique boutique property offering both rooms and fully equipped apartments with kitchens and laundry facilities.
There are five separate living quarters (three apartments and two guest rooms) with their own distinctive style combining an eclectic mix of elegant antiques and modern amenities. All but one of the accommodations have beautiful views of the lake.
We stayed in the lovely two-bedroom apartment called L’Isola Comacina, named after the only island on Lake Como. The apartment is so spacious, it feels like you are on a private island compound. Families love the private, covered terrace with a farm table that seats six … perfect for dining al fresco or playing cards.
Meanwhile, L’Onda apartment has a Jacuzzi tub in the open living, dining area with low-set windows that allow guests to enjoy the views of the lake while relaxing in the tub. All Palazzo del Vice Re guests are spoiled with twice-daily housekeeping and lulled to sleep by the scent of fresh lavender from the sachets Giovanna, the housekeeper, leaves on the beds.
Guests of Palazzo Del Vice Re enjoy village life with easy access to bustling Bellagio — the best of both worlds! This authentic Italian retreat is the perfect home base to explore Lake Como. Private water taxis are a great way to explore the towns, villages, villas, and gardens along the lake.
Part of the charm of the Palazzo is that guests cannot reach the property by car. Lezzeno is located an hour and a half from Milan via car; guests park in a lot 100 meters away, call on arrival, and a porter helps with luggage.
Although there is no restaurant on site, a delicious breakfast is served by the lovely Palazzo team of Giovanna and Jagath, who feel like family by the end of a stay. There is no better place to enjoy the Lake Como views than over coffee on the Palazzo courtyard terrace. If guests prefer to eat breakfast indoors, the“Sala Colazione”provides an elegant atmosphere with a Renaissance-era fresco and 17th century fireplace.
The Palazzo team is happy to stock the refrigerator in apartments apartment prior to arrival. Or guests can embrace the Italian lifestyle and visit one of the many nearby villages on their market day. A special treat is to join the owner of the Palazzo one evening under the vaulted stone-clad ceilings of the Cantina to sample some of his favorite wines and delicacies, including melt-in-your-mouth prosciutto and locally produced cheeses, honey and olives.
Nicoletta, the wonderful General Manager, is happy to make reservations at one of the delightful family-owned restaurants in Lezzeno.
> There is a small public beach and playground that are located a stone’s throw away from the Palazzo. Get the whole family together for a game of volleyball at the public beach, or take the complementary bicycles for a ride along the lake (limited bike sizes are available).
> My kids loved going to Hotel Aurora in Lezzeno, where for a small fee, we had access to their Beach Club with paddle boards and two trampolines (one on the water and one on the shore).
> We also rented a boat with an experienced driver to go tubing and water skiing.
> Another option for water fun is the Bellagio Sporting Club, where families can take a swim in the pool and enjoy some great pizza for lunch.
> Don’t miss one of the lake’s most beautiful villas, Villa del Balbianello, and its stunning gardens. This is a perfect spot for little ones to run and blow off some steam. You can take a water taxi to Lenno and then a nice walk along the lake to the villa. I recommend a stop for homemade artisanal gelato at La Fabbrica del Gelato in Lenno before or after your visit to the villa.
> If you are feeling adventurous, you can drive or take a hydrofoil to Como, or drive/hire a taxi to take you across the Swiss border to Lugano.
This Italian phrase translates to “sweet doing nothing.” Palazzo Del Vice Re is a magical place that will enable busy families relax together, unplug, and enjoy the sweet life of Italy. We will never forget the sound of waking to church bells and hymns being sung in Italian around us on Lake Como.
