Where Italy Meets Switzerland for Photo Friday

If you didn’t know better and arrived in the city of Lugano on Lake Lugano, you’d think you were in Italy. You hear Italian, it looks Italian, and it tastes Italian. Surprise, surprise — the city of Lugano is part of the Ticino region of Switzerland.

Lake Lugano Switzerland

We had a parents-only getaway to Lake Lugano this fall. The scenery is very striking with rugged mountains that rise right out of the lake.

Gandria Lake Lugano Switzerland

The sleepy little village of Gandria stole my heart. Narrow cobblestone streets weave through the village — every building is perched on the hillside over the water.

Hike to Lugano from Gandria Switzerland

After an excellent pasta lunch in Gandria, we decided to take the lakeside walking trail back to Lugano instead of the ferry. Our concierge described the walk as “fitness” — indeed!

Club Sandwich Lake Lugano

The one thing that is definitely not Italian is the food prices. I thought I was numb to sticker shock after living in Switzerland for the past year, but the club sandwich for over $50 left me wide-eyed (granted it was at a top-rated hotel, but …).

Since it was date weekend and they are rare, we decided to splurge and stay at the elegant Hotel Splendide Royal. The service is exceptional and so are the views. If you go, stay in the Classic wing for the old-world experience.
