If you live in Europe or are there for a trip without kids this winter, a two-night getaway to Whitepod, an eco-luxury hotel in Switzerland, is the ultimate romantic escape. 40 geodesic tents (pods) perched over a valley overlook fantastic Alpine scenery. It’s definitely glamping – not camping – as each pod includes a wood stove, a cozy bed, and a complete bathroom. The tent stays toasty but one parent must stoke the fire all night long. Part of the fun!
The adventure starts the minute you arrive at Whitepod as guests are given a map, headlamp, and snowshoes at check-in and must find their way to their pod, a 10-minute walk away through the village and then the woods.
During sunny weather this is no big deal, but we arrived in a snowstorm and finding our pod took a bit of effort. Luggage is transported via snowmobile.
The thrill continues for dinner as you must walk to the restaurant located back at the check-in station via snowshoe and headlamp. Each pod has room service so you can drink wine and then make your way to dinner for even more excitement.
Breakfast is a hearty and cozy affair in the lounge (a regular building) located in the center of the pods.
There is a 7 km private ski area onsite, although there race happening during our stay so we didn’t get a chance to ski. Note, this is skiing for intermediate to advanced skiers only as the slopes are not groomed.
The big activity is snowshoeing on one of a few suggested routes through the forest. There’s also dog sledding, cross-country skiing, and winter hiking.
It’s so refreshing to do something so utterly unique. Nothing works to get you out of old ruts as a couple better than an outdoors-oriented adventure in stunning natural scenery. You don’t need to talk about the kids as you’ll be talking about your cool pod!
