Beyond the Family Suite: 8 European Hotels with Private Villas

Private villas at luxury hotels offer something rare, especially in Europe’s historic cities where space is at a premium: the generous square footage of a standalone property with the ease and convenience of traditional hotel amenities. Select European luxury hotels have perfected this combination, with private villas ideal for families with young kids and teens, or a multigenerational group, who want breathing room without having to skimp on service.

According to Jon Makhmaltchi, founder of luxury travel marketing company J.MAK, staying in private villas can be the perfect compromise. “Private villas really afford the space and privacy most dream of, especially a private pool or hot tub, but when attached to a hotel there is no better luxury than calling room service or housekeeping at a moment’s notice for all the things you might need or want on the spot,” he says.

If you’re planning your own luxury family vacation to Europe, here are some of our favorite hotels with villas across the continent.

Saint James Paris

A short stroll from the famed Arc de Triomphe, Saint James Paris offers families a choice between two freestanding homes known as Pavilions within the hotel’s garden, or four private apartments housed in a villa beside the main hotel. Pavilions each sleep up to four guests, feature a private terrace and come equipped with a wellness that includes a Jacuzzi tub and sauna. Apartments, meanwhile, sleep between two and four and include room service and housekeeping. Regardless of which option you choose, you’ll have full access to the hotel common areas — enjoy dinner at Saint James’ Michelin-starred restaurant, Bellefeuille, or perhaps a spa treatment at the recently revamped Spa Guerlain.
