Coast-to-Coast Cheer: Best Towns in the U.S. for Christmas

Leavenworth, Washington

The spirit of a Bavarian Christmas is alive and well in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, where the half-timbered town of Leavenworth offers next-level merriment from Thanksgiving to February: more than half a million lights, carolers, horse-drawn sleigh rides and appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Drop by the Nutcracker Museum, warm up with mulled wine and snack on traditional Bavarian foods like sausages, pretzels, sauerkraut and schnitzel alongside roasted chestnuts, pastries, fudge and gingerbread.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Interested in bright blue skies with crisp, frosty air and a calendar full of concerts and cultural events? Head to Santa Fe, where carolers and musicians accompany visitors for the popular Canyon Road Farolito Walk on Christmas Eve, lit with thousands of farolitos (paper lanterns). If skiing is part of your holiday tradition, Ski Santa Fe has a range of terrain from beginner hills to long cruisers and thigh-burning bump runs. Get some shopping done at the Winter Spanish Market on December 6 and 7, where 75 juried traditional artists and youth artists show off their talent and work. If you plan on staying to ring in 2026, drop by the 11th Annual New Year’s Eve on the Plaza for live music and a midnight countdown with the mayor.

Stay: Enjoy festive décor, lantern-lit grounds, cozy fireside moments and flavors such as roasted chiles and hot chocolate at Bishop’s Lodge, home to 83 guestrooms, 14 suites and a private casita. Families can also send letters to Santa, join an ornament atelier and sit down to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners at SkyFire restaurant.

Woodstock, Vermont

If a quiet and quintessential New England village scene is your holiday jam, bundle up and set out for the picturesque and historic town of Woodstock. Highlights include its annual Wassail Weekend festival (mid-December), featuring a horse-and-carriage parade, caroling and other holiday festivities. Visitors can also enjoy shopping in the village, nearby skiing and snowshoeing, and events such as the Winter Celebration on the Farm at Billings Farm & Museum.

Stay: If a Christmas card could come to life, the luxurious 142-room Woodstock Inn & Resort would be it. Think wreaths on the windows, fireplaces, a cozy spa and old-fashioned charm in the heart of the snowy Green Mountains. The hotel also offers gala Christmas and New Year’s Eve dinners.

Seaside, Florida

Just because there are more palm trees than pine trees doesn’t mean things can’t jingle and twinkle like the best of Christmas towns. In the Florida Panhandle town of Seaside, the wonder of the season bubbles over at the annual Turn on the Town celebration, held at the end of November, and starts with a parade down iconic Highway 30A, the 26-mile road that connects a string of beach towns along the Gulf of Mexico. Visitors can also enjoy live music and a special appearance by Santa Claus before a countdown to light up the 24-foot tree and kick off the coastal Christmas.

Stay: A 10-minute walk or so from downtown Seaside, WaterColor Inn & Resort has generously sized rooms and suites overlooking the sugar-sand dunes, while higher floors feature views of the emerald-green waters of the Gulf. Park City, Utah

This ski town knows how to mix on-piste adventure with après-holiday festivity. Hit the slopes by day and enjoy Park City’s annual Snow Globe Stroll, featuring seven life-size snow globes created by local artists and set up along Main Street (also a hot spot for shopping and dining). Charlotte, North Carolina

There’s plenty to love about a holiday escape to Charlotte, starting with a visit to Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Speedway Christmas the Southeast’s largest drive-thru holiday light show, with more than 5 million lights spread around a four-mile course. Just west of the city, McAdenville, a.k.a. Christmas Town USA,  transforms into a whimsical wonderland with extensive light displays. For a longer road trip, head about two hours east to Asheville and the iconic Biltmore Estate, where enchanting holiday events run through the New Year.

Stay: In the heart of Uptown Charlotte, the Ivey’s Hotel, originally the home of the J.B. Santa Barbara, California

There’s no snow in sight, but the “American Riviera” has pristine beaches, twinkling harbor lights and festive experiences that inspire multigenerational memory-making. A fun holiday tradition now in its third year is sock skating on the roof at the Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, which invites “skaters” to slide around specialty tiles that mimic ice. The city’s fourth Annual ZooLights runs through January 11 and features more than 50,000 LED lights set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, where, on December 14, the Parade of Lights sees kayakers, paddleboarders and boats decked in their holiday finest filling the harbor, followed by a festive fireworks display. Be sure to plan a day trip to the nearby Danish-themed village of Solvang and tuck into Christmas treats such as æbleskiver (pancake balls), butter cookies and kringle, a flaky layered pastry filled with fruit or nuts and drizzled with icing.

Stay: About 35 miles from busy Santa Barbara lies the pedestrian-friendly town of Los Olivos, also a sophisticated wine tasting getaway. The family-owned Fess Parker Wine Country Inn is a luxury 19-room retreat with fireplaces, daily breakfast, a spa and vacation rental-style cabins onsite for larger groups.
