Toddlers are quite possibly the most curious of all age groups, and they’re fascinated by the simplest of new things, which is why traveling offers them such incredible experiences and interesting places to make sense of. Whether it’s a fast-moving metro ride along Washington, D.C.’s Red Line, feeding giraffes at the San Diego Zoo or playing along the beaches of Maui, appreciate and indulge your toddler’s curiosity and wonder — you’ll be glad you did.

Two adults wearing white Sea Trek helmet-diving gear are submerged in an aquarium tank, visible through the glass wall, with one smiling toward the outside. A young red-haired child in an orange shirt stands at the glass and waves with one hand raised, while a second child is partially visible at the left edge of the frame.

9 Fabulous Toddler-Friendly Vacations in the U.S.

Phoenix & Scottsdale, Arizona

Year-round sun, easy desert trails and dozens of resorts with terrific pools make the greater Phoenix area a no-brainer for families with little ones. When you and your crew are ready to venture off-property, visit the lovely Desert Botanical Garden, home to more than 55,000 arid plants from towering cacti to vibrant wildflowers (the butterfly pavilion and onsite Gertrude’s restaurant are both fantastic too). Alternatively, the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park combines a train museum with a 15-inch gauge train that travels around the grounds. The Children’s Museum of Phoenix has fabulous interactive play spaces designed specifically for younger kids, and OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale is compact enough for limited attention spans.

Stay: Set on 65 acres, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is a world unto itself with six pools (including one with a sand beach and a splash pad); five restaurants; renowned golfing; a fabulous spa; and more. Come the holidays, a train ride through light decorations in the shapes of rocking horses, pirate ships, swans and other figures is a major highlight.

A large outdoor swimming pool with turquoise water and a Greek key-patterned tile border occupies the foreground, with a row of striped blue-and-white chaise lounges arranged along the far edge. An ornate dark iron pedestrian bridge spans a lagoon behind the pool, with white cottage-style resort buildings and tall Southern trees visible beyond under a bright blue sky.

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

With 32 miles of riverfront and maritime forests, coastal Palmetto Bluff is a nature lover’s paradise with activities such as biking and horseback riding. Toddlers will especially love the multi-story treehouses built into live oak trees in Wilson and Moreland villages. Plus, it’s a 40-minute drive to nearby Savannah, a well-preserved walkable city with loads of Southern charm.

Stay: A gorgeous Lowcountry resort spread across 2,000 acres, the Montage Palmetto Bluff is truly a destination in its own right. Choose from a range of suites, cottages and residences and relax amid the quiet wilderness. From dolphin tours (the May River is home to a large, active population of bottlenose dolphins) to nightly s’mores to multiple pools, toddlers will be thrilled.

Eight children in blue-patterned swimsuits play tug-of-war on a sandy beach, divided into two teams pulling opposite ends of a white rope marked with a red flag in the center. Small motorboats float on a calm, gray-toned harbor in the background.
Even toddlers can get in on fun beach games like tug-of-war at Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod. Photo courtesy of Chatham Bars Inn

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

A large hook-shaped peninsula extending into the Atlantic, Cape Cod is dotted with lighthouses, cottages and charming small towns such as Chatham, Falmouth and Provincetown. It’s worth noting that the wide, sandy stretches facing Cape Cod Bay, including Mayflower Beach and Corporation Beach, boast calmer, shallower waters perfect for tots. After a day of fun in the sun, stroll small towns popping into carousels, ice cream shops and pint-size bookstores. You and your brood can even take a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard for the day.

Stay: Rest your head at the 217-room Chatham Bars Inn, among the best digs on the Cape. In addition to multiple room configurations that work especially well for littles, it boasts its own beach with cabanas as well as a private boat for getting out into the water and spotting seals, whales and other marine life.

The iconic red neon "Public Market Center" sign at Seattle's Pike Place Market is mounted on a black metal structure above the market entrance, with a circular clock displaying the time and flower boxes in bloom below. The La Salle Hotel and a partial "Farmers" sign are visible in the background against a clear blue sky.

Seattle, Washington

Surrounded by mountains, lush evergreen forest and Puget Sound, Seattle is spectacularly beautiful. For tots, it also means wonderful parks such as the Artists at Play recreation area in the shadow of the Space Needle and Jefferson Park with hillside slides and splash pads. Tour historic Pike Place Market, taking in the sights and smells of fish being tossed back and forth and fresh produce (grab a basket of juicy berries to gobble along the way). Daily Dozen Doughnut Company’s famous mini-donuts are also a must! Seattle also offers an opportunity to get out on the water with ferries to nearby and regional destinations. Hop on the 35-minute ferry to Bainbridge Island for an easy and fun day trip.

Stay: Completely refreshed less than a year ago, the 189-room Kimpton Hotel Monaco Seattle gets bonus points for its downtown location, sprawling rooms and fantastic onsite restaurant, Marin.

A four-photo collage of Maui family experiences shows a young boy feeding a black alpaca on a farm with mountain views, a freshly peeled pineapple being held upside down by two hands, a smiling boy in a blue shirt and sun hat cradling a baby goat in an Adirondack chair, and a blonde child pressing close to an aquarium glass as blue tropical fish swim past.

Maui, Hawaii

Known as the Valley Isle, Maui has been a family favorite for decades thanks to swimmable beaches like Kapalua Bay and Keawakapu Beach, easy-to-navigate roadways and a multitude of dining options (not to mention a high number of rental cars). While toddlers will be more than content building sandcastles or splashing in pools, there are also several Upcountry farms like Ali’i Kula Lavender and Surfing Goat Dairy that are fun for tots, too. The Maui Ocean Center features a 750,000-gallon tank with sharks and stingrays. (It’s also worth noting that while recovery efforts from the devastating 2023 wildfires continue, much of the island and most tourism-related activities are fully back.)

Stay: On the southern end of the Wailea community, the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea feels secluded in the best way. The upscale property is easily one of the top picks across the Hawaiian islands, with a stunning family pool as well as complimentary activities such as snorkeling, outrigger canoeing and hula dancing.

A giant panda holds a bundle of bamboo stalks and leaves in its front paws and chews on them, its black-and-white face filling much of the frame in close-up. Green foliage and a large rock formation are visible in the blurred background.

San Diego, California

Sunny and laid-back, San Diego is pretty much synonymous with kid-friendly. From Oceanside and Encinitas in the north to La Jolla and Coronado farther south, there’s no shortage of powdery beaches to explore. Brick-loving toddlers will be ecstatic to visit Legoland California and its Duplo Playtown (don’t miss the fun mini-train ride!). Another favorite, of course, is the San Diego Zoo. Families with littles might want to consider some of the zoo’s guided experiences such as a 60-minute Discovery Cart tour, which makes it easier to get around and get up close to animals.

Stay: A SoCal legend, the beachfront Hotel del Coronado recently emerged from a major renovation, revealing gorgeously redone rooms with nods to the property’s Victorian style and charm, as well as additional pools and eateries galore (from the casual Eno Market & Pizzeria to a NOBU outpost). At holiday time, the landmark property goes all out for the winter season.

A three-photo collage shows a young boy in green board shorts playing in a sand pit at the water's edge on a white-sand beach with turquoise surf, with a green bucket and red shovel visible beside him. In the top left he grins with both arms raised, in the top right he digs with his back to the camera, and in the bottom image he leans forward hands-first into the sand.

Santa Rosa Beach, Florida

Among the string of beach communities along Highway 30A on Florida’s Gulf side, Santa Rosa Beach is known for its calm, emerald-green waters and soft, sugary sand — perfect for little toes. Wide bike paths are stroller-friendly, making it easy to move about and take littles anywhere. Visit Grayton Beach State Park to wander through sand dunes and coastal forests along a one-mile trail.

Stay: Oversize family suites at WaterColor Inn are outfitted with separate sitting areas as well as kitchenettes with fridges and microwaves, which means easy snack prep and parents can still hang out while toddlers nap. Kids and adults alike will love Camp Watercolor, a designated family area with two pools with slides, as well as a lazy river, playground and basketball court.

A young child with curly brown hair stands at an air-powered launcher at a children's museum exhibit, directing a blue ball toward a small basketball hoop mounted on a backboard. A sign on the nearby column reads "What happens to the ball when you speed up or slow down the air flow?" suggesting an interactive science activity.

Washington, D.C.

The capital might not immediately come to mind as a toddler-friendly destination, but it can be fantastic with young kids in many surprising ways. Free Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo (don’t miss the pandas!) mean you can take a quick whirl around exhibits and enclosures without feeling like you’ve shelled out loads of money. The National Mall has plenty of green space for little legs to run, not to mention a historic 1947 carousel with hand-carved horses and a sea dragon that returns this year after extensive restoration. (It sits in front of the Arts & Industries building.) Other good bets outdoors include the National Arboretum, which comes alive with cherry blossoms, lilacs, dogwoods and azaleas during the spring; on rainy days, the National Children’s Museum is just the ticket. Plus, transportation-obsessed tots will love riding public transit.

Stay: Stylish and contemporary, the 327-room Dupont Circle Hotel is in the heart of the walkable, lively Dupont Circle neighborhood. It’s also not far from Kramers, a beloved bookstore and café that’s something of a D.C. institution.

A young child with blonde hair runs barefoot toward the water on a sandy beach, wearing a white long-sleeve rashguard, a colorful skirt, and carrying an orange item in one hand. Rocky outcroppings, a forested headland, and a small island dot the calm shoreline in the background under an overcast sky.

Acadia National Park, Maine

With flat, stroller-friendly trails, car-free carriage roads and accessible tidepools, Acadia National Park makes it easy for toddlers to get out in nature. The Jordan Pond Path is a scenic loop that’s great for young walkers, while the half-mile Wonderland Trail and Ship Harbor Trail, winding through pine forests, lead to tidepools that are perfect for little explorers. As for getting into the water, the shallow and (in summer) warm Echo Lake Beach is a favorite with families.

Stay: Overlooking Frenchman Bay and the Porcupine Islands, Bar Harbor Inn & Spa offers panoramic views of the area along with a heated outdoor pool and cozy fire pit (perfect for s’mores!).
