Fat Tire Paris is one of our favorite recommendations for active families who want a unique and engaging way to explore Paris together. Their best-known Paris bike tours involve pedaling through the streets and through the parks of Paris on bikes with a guide who helps ensure the route is safe and provides contextual information.
We went on our tour on a glorious Sunday in July with four adults and four children, ages 6 to 13. I think all parents start these tours with a certain amount of trepidation when it comes to safely biking around a city as big and busy as Paris with kids, but we immediately slipped into our comfort zone when we realized that the bike route is chosen with intention and that Fat Tire runs these tours every day of the week, i.e. they know what they are doing.
I interviewed the head of marketing for Fat Tire Bike Tours recently to pass essential family bike tour frequently asked questions to our readers:
What is your most popular tour for families and why?
Our Paris Day Bike Tour is by far and away our family favorite! We have bikes equipped for any rider, from baby seats to large adult bikes. The route includes the highlights of the city and allows time for stops to take photos and ask questions, and it’s extremely kid-friendly. We utilize bike paths and parks as much as possible, and include a stop for lunch in the Tuileries Gardens during our morning tour. It’s a great combination of exercise, sightseeing and learning.
What is the minimum age that most families find that it is enjoyable for their kids?
We can accommodate babies on our bike tours, as long as the baby is strong enough to hold their head up. Our baby seats are perfect for longer rides, like the Versailles Bike Tour or our Monet’s Gardens Bike Tour. Our walking tours are stroller-friendly, and our skip-the-line tours are great for kids.
Do you have any insider tips for using your service in Paris in particular?
Use our guides as your personal concierge service! Our guides live in Paris and they take advantage of every opportunity to discover new neighborhoods. Ask them about their favorite restaurants, places of interest, parks, day-out-of-Paris destinations and fun facts. They love sharing, as you can see here!
Are you offering any new programs in 2017?
Yes! We have an exciting new tour we’ve developed called our VIP Versailles Bike Tour. This tour offers guests access to every aspect in Versailles: a guided tour of the park, including access to Marie-Antoinette’s Hameau; a guided tour of the Royal Apartments in the chateau; access to the Hall of Mirrors; and access into the formal gardens. We will still be offering our classic Versailles Bike Tour, which is another family favorite. We’re also inaugurating a tour in the Père Lachaise cemetery, and a Local Paris Bike Tour that explores the 10th and 11th districts of Paris.
