If you look up “divine beach” in the dictionary, a picture of the beach at Eden Roc Cap Cana just might pop up as the ultimate visual definition of these words. Located in Cap Cana, a 30,000-acre high-end resort and residential development near Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, this property offers a spectacular luxury Caribbean getaway for families. With just 34 all-suite accommodations in the main resort, the atmosphere is private and intimate, yet the overall complex is expansive enough that every guest needs his or her own golf cart or electric car to get around.
Eden Roc Cap Cana is isolated (although it’s only a 15-minute drive from an international airport) — there’s nothing urban in this area at all — but that’s the whole point of staying here. It’s a true beach escape with all of the associated decompression perks.
The resort’s idyllic protected cove, the Caletón Beach Club, is lined with palm trees and unbelievably soft white sand on this private beach. Choose from a generous array of la palapa, which provide ample shade for those who want it, and conversely, there’s plenty of room for those who want to bask in the sun. The warm turquoise water is swimmable and has just enough wave action so that families can bodysurf.
Although this is not a beach that extends forever in both directions, there’s plenty of space for everyone. And best of all, from a parent perspective, it’s easy to keep an eye on kids without having them right next to you. There’s a beach hut stocked with toys, boogie boards, and snorkeling gear, kayaks, and other water play goodies, as well as a bar with staff coming by continually for those who want adult beverages or otherwise. Because the beach is private and isolated, there is nobody walking by to sell you something, and it’s blissfully quiet without heavy waterfront traffic.
If guests get hungry, they don’t have to go far. The beachfront La Palapa restaurant is just steps away and serves everything from pasta and salads to full fish and meat main courses. There’s also a beachfront swimming pool, with a kids’ pool available for those who want to swim outside the ocean.
Honestly, this is one of the best hotel beaches I’ve experienced anywhere in the world for beauty, convenience, user-friendly attributes, and relaxation.
The Koko Kids’ Club provides supervised entertainment for children aged 4-12. They have an outlet right off the beach so that parents have a place to drop kids off to get out of the sun, as well as an outlet by the main pool. The Eden Roc beach club option is absolutely brilliant for parents who don’t want to commit to specific kids’ club dropoff times. I wish I’d found a property that had that available when our son was young! Activity options include crafts and games. It’s geared toward entertaining younger children.
The all-suite accommodations are another property highlight. Two-bedroom, two-bathroom Family Suites are optimal for families. The second bedroom has bunk beds and the living room has a sofa bed, so these units easily sleep families 2 adults and 2-3 children. At 1,316 square meters, families have a wonderful open space to spread out. All rooms at Eden Roc Cap Cana have private pools and gardens. Fantastic for families looking to spend some intimate time together, but without giving up the amenities of a full resort.
We stayed in a Junior Suite with an open-plan bedroom and living room that includes a sofa bed. Although this is their smallest suite, at 824 square meters, it’s still massive compared to standard hotel rooms. These suites were custom-developed for Eden Roc at Cap Cana with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, plus marble floors. They are bright and filled with light.
Bathrooms have marble Jacuzzis, rain showers, and an outdoor shower and sitting area as well. There’s an in-room Nespresso coffee maker and of course, a fully stocked mini-bar. Does it sound like hotel room paradise? It is.
For a property with only 34 suites, there are excellent dining choices. Mediterraneo Restaurant offers fine dining overlooking the gorgeous main pool. Dinner is a gastronomic affair at this restaurant. It offers sophisticated creations using local ingredients, such as saffron carnaroli risotto with sautéed scallops and confit garlic emulsion, i.e. not something most of us are qualified to make at home. We fell in love with dinner on the ocean at La Palapa, a perfect casual option with kids that has enough variety to be appealing for multiple meals.
The main pool has a pool bar and the Blue Lagoon Restaurant, offering fresh pizzas and salads for lunch. There’s a reason Eden Roc Cap Cana is one of the few Relais & Chateaux hotels in the Caribbean. They take pride in their culinary offerings, and it shows.
There’s a full spa offering an array of signature face and body treatments overlooking a man-made lagoon and swimming pool. We had a couples massage at Solaya Spa by two very talented therapists in the beachfront suite, listening to the sound of the ocean.
The fitness center is small, but I understand they will be updating the size over time. It includes a few weights and cardio machines. It’s sufficient for a workout, but not a property highlight.
Eden Roc Cap Cana is a getaway resort to unwind. There’s no question that it’s ideal for babies, toddlers, and young school-age kids. For families with tweens and teens, it’s a great option as long as the kids are happy on the beach or at the pool. There’s not a big list of other activities to entertain them on the property.
That said, Cap Cana offers a sweet adventure park called Scape Park, that is just a short golf cart ride away. Scape Park features a zipline, adventure buggies, and a gorgeous bright blue lagoon called Hoyo Azul. There are animals here (in cages) as well as hiking paths. Scape Park is well-organized and zipline safety is a clear priority (kids must be 11+ years to ride solo)— it’s definitely a fantastic spot for families to spend half a day.
I don’t golf, but I’m pretty sure Cap Cana is a golfer’s paradise, with a Jack Nicklaus designed course on the ocean. The scenery around the golf course is absolutely spectacular.
