When the kids have fun, everyone has fun. That’s the philosophy that’s made Colorado’s Breckenridge Resort a top pick for family ski vacations. Between the snow, the amenities, the price and the ultra-friendly locals, Breckenridge has it all.
Breckenridge (or “Breck,” as it is fondly called) has world-class instructors who know how to capture your child’s attention and help them fall in love with skiing and snowboarding. There are a variety of options, from special camps to privates.
Our family tried the U4: the ultimate 4 lesson, designed specifically for a small-group learning environment. The groups max out at a 4:1 ratio for personalized treatment. We spent all day with Joe, ski instructor extraordinaire, who provided plenty of feedback. We progressed quickly and did not even realize it because we were having so much fun.
Hotels in Breckenridge include ski-in and ski-out hotels and condos, as well as in-town properties. Families can choose accommodations at many price points. We stayed at The Village at Breckenridge condominium suites. These are a Breck favorite, with ski-in/ski-out access. They’re centrally located at the base of Peak 9, and the ski school is right out the door. There are also onsite ski and board rentals at Breck Sports.
When little ones want a break from the mountain, there are a number of fun activities for them that don’t involve skis or a snowboard. For hands-on indoor play, take them to the Mountain Top Children’s Museum.
The Breckenridge Recreation Center offers two climbing walls, an indoor pool and slide, basketball, racquetball and tennis courts, and more. Families can purchase a one-day pass or a punch card. Kids 6 and under can try hockey classes at MiniMites Hockey; kids of any age can skate at the indoor/outdoor ice rinks at Stephen C. West Ice Arena.
Older kids will love a trip to Eric’s Arcade on Main Street for pinball and Ms. Pac-Man.
Breckenridge is the largest historic district in Colorado, and visitors can ski right to town. The architecture and the mountains in the background make it very picturesque, especially at night when it’s lit up like a Christmas village.
Both skiers and non-skiers will love exploring the quaint streets lined with over 200 shops and restaurants. There are plenty of family-restaurant places to eat; one local favorite is Empire Burger. It’s easy to find — just look for the line.
One of my kids’ favorite things to do was visit the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for a special treat. The Rocky Road chocolate is a must-try. Be sure to get some for the flight home!
