Set against the rolling foothills of Vermont’s Green Mountains, the Woodstock Inn & Resort is a warm and inviting luxury property in the small town of Woodstock and a welcoming escape for families, couples or friends looking to unwind amid the area’s natural beauty. As a four-season resort, it’s an excellent choice for fall leaf peeping, a winter ski weekend or a summer hiking retreat, as well as a great stopover for guests traveling farther north.
As you step inside, you’re welcomed by a captivating fireplace, oversize leather sofas and friendly smiles. The inn perfectly balances New England lodge style with modern amenities, and it makes for an ideal home base to enjoy a comfortable adventure.
The Woodstock has 142 rooms and suites, all with traditional yet fresh decor that feels true to the local setting. Standard Garden and Woodstock rooms are king-only, while Tavern rooms come with either a king, two queens or a king plus sofa bed. The Collection rooms are themed and reflect aspects of the Vermont experience — for example, the Angler features antique fly rods and maps of fishing locations; the Links includes golf memorabilia; and the Sugar House celebrates the history of Vermont maple syrup.
For maximum space, book one of the suites, each an homage to an important person in Woodstock’s history. The three-bedroom Laurance S. Rockefeller Suite is especially well configured for larger families or multigenerational getaways, while Legacy Suites all come with a king bed plus a sofa bed.
TIP: Some rooms at The Woodstock accommodate pets and some do not, so be sure to specify if you need a pet-friendly room when you book.
Upon arrival, we were given an excellent list of activities on the property. We especially enjoyed the Retro Game Room, a popular spot for the kids, outfitted with a pool table, pinball machines and other recreational equipment. They went through a few rounds of air hockey and Pac-Man and had the opportunity to meet and play with other children as well. The Library houses a great selection of books and board games such as checkers and chess. Afternoon tea, coffee and delicious cookies are served in the Conservatory each afternoon for a pick-me-up.
Guests also have access to one of two swimming pools: a seasonal saltwater pool on the grounds and an indoor pool at the nearby Woodstock Athletic Club. Parents can unwind with a treatment at the full-service spa onsite or fitness classes at the Athletic Club, such as yoga and barre.

The Woodstock offers numerous activities beyond the main inn for families to enjoy. While we did not spend time there, Saskadena Six Ski Area, a perfect place for beginners, is easily accessible from the hotel, and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding and sleigh rides at Billings Farm & Museum are other popular winter pursuits. In warmer weather, guests can play a round of tennis at the Athletic Club or golf at Woodstock Country Club, join a fly-fishing excursion, go mountain biking or set out for a hike or nature walk. Other experiences that the kids were keen to return to and try out were falconry, biking around town on the resort’s complimentary cruiser bikes, and touring the Kelly Way Gardens where much of the produce for the inn’s restaurants is grown (open May through October).
Most recently, The Woodstock launched its Passion Pursuits program, a series of guided experiences designed to help guests discover new interests or reconnect with old ones. Themes range from maple sugaring and shopping to pickleball and live music.
The main dining venues onsite serve delicious dishes that appealed to our whole family. A buffet-style breakfast in the Red Rooster offers a mix of hot and cold items, fresh juices and a selection of pastries. The Red Rooster also serves lunch, and the grilled cheese sandwiches here were a popular and perfect favorite. Richardson’s Tavern (reopening in June 2025) is an alternative spot for breakfast and lunch as well as dinner, plus libations that include local craft beers. The Fairway Grill at Woodstock Country Club is a great lunch option for those planning to golf during their stay, and you’ll find light fare at Perley’s Pourhouse at the Saskadena Six Ski Area. Both the Fairway Grill and Perley’s are open seasonally.
Woodstock itself has a limited selection of restaurants, so we did most of our dining at the inn, which offered plenty of variety. The hotel has been working with the town to bring in a more diverse range of local dining to appeal to guests.
Sights not to miss off-property include:
Billings Farm & Museum: This working farm and museum hosts educational experiences on dairy farming and provides other experiences that let visitors interact with animals.
Kelly Way Gardens: Guided tours, special events and gardening classes are available in summer.
Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park: This 550-acre historic forest features exhibits on conservation history and a tour of a Victorian mansion.
