Capella Marigot Bay Resort and Marina in Saint Lucia offers an environment of subtle, low-key luxury that’s perfect for families who need to unwind. From the moment guests arrive at the airport, greeted by the hotel staff with cold lavender towels and a dried fruit treat to enjoy during the beautiful ride to the resort, a sense of relaxation takes over and lingers until it’s time to leave.
Marigot Bay sits on the northwestern edge of the island, not far from the capital city of Castries. Capella is cut into a hillside and blends into its beautiful surroundings, rich with lush vegetation and tropical blossoms that enhance the natural beauty of the bay. The transfer from the airport takes about an hour, but it’s a great way to see a bit of the island. Our driver stopped so the kids could take pictures of the banana and cashew trees — our city girls did not even know that cashews grow on trees!
The one-, two- and three-bedroom suites are absolutely ideal for families. They all have beautiful kitchens with a washer and dryer, a large living area and patios or terraces. Some have private hot tubs too. The upper-level suites have the most stunning views, but families with younger children should request a suite on a lower level, as there are lots of steps (and no elevator) to access the higher floors. We stayed in a two-bedroom suite; my daughters loved that they had separate beds in their room and felt like princesses with the surrounding mosquito netting.

The Grill at 14⁰61⁰ serves a wonderful breakfast buffet and is the fine-dining venue for dinner. It has wonderful views of the bay and offers a variety of locally sourced seafood, meats and produce. There’s a children’s menu as well. For an extraordinary experience, reserve a private table in the onsite Alexandria Gardens.
Bayside Cafe is the more casual option. Babysitting can be arranged so that parents can enjoy a rum tasting or rum infusing class at the Rum Cave.
The chef can create a three-course dinner of prepared foods, delivered to your room complete with cooking instructions for the main course. The starter and dessert are served cold, so there’s no cooking involved. This is perfect option for families who have been out all day and want to relax in their suite.
Auriga Spa & Fitness Center is an indoor/outdoor oasis. Parents can book the tree house for a couples massage in a truly unique setting. For those who have indulged at the Rum Cave and need to cleanse their systems, I highly recommend the chlorophyll water at the spa.
There are two freshwater infinity plunge pools, surrounded by cabanas, on the beautiful multi-level pool complex. The upper pool is intended for families and children, while the lower pool offers a quieter adults-only setting. The swim-up bar was a big hit and has the best mango smoothies ever, according to my kids. Freshly cut coconuts served by the pool are another refreshing treat. And returning to our suite to find a bucket of local Piton beer on ice, with plantain chips and salsa, was the perfect ending to a day in the sun.
Advice from our experts on the best way to enjoy the Caribbean with kids >
A personal assistant is available to help guests explore and discover the island through a myriad of bespoke activities. We did a half-day boat ride with Saltwater Services to Pigeon Island National Park on the north of the island. If your plans allow for exploring the south side, take a boat ride to see the magnificent Pitons and snorkel on the reef at the Marine Reserve.
Although it’s a treat to watch the mega-yachts at the marina on Marigot Bay, this location isn’t about beaches. A complimentary water taxi at the marina village takes guests to a small beach across the bay. All of the beaches on the island are public and accessible either by boat or car for families who want a day on the sand.
Getting to Saint Lucia is easy. JetBlue offers nonstop flights from New York and United flies nonstop from Newark, making it a great choice for families who don’t want to deal with connections.
