Thailand is having a moment. Already one of Asia’s top travel destinations, with more than 40 million annual visitors, the country is even more squarely in the spotlight thanks to the White Lotus factor, as season three was filmed at the tony Four Seasons Koh Samui. But while the HBO series showcases the glamour of a high-end resort vacation, there’s another side of Thailand that’s equally captivating (sans poisonous piña coladas) — one that offers a mix of serenity, culture and nature in places you might never have heard of.

“Thailand might not be the land of undiscovered villages anymore,” says Jeremy Hofmann, a Bangkok-based travel agent, “but it still has plenty of places that feel untouched — where travelers can really connect with the land and local life.” He recommends eight Thailand vacation destinations that showcase the country’s unspoiled beauty and singular traditions.

8 Secret Thailand Vacation Destinations

Pranburi: Coastal Calm Without the Crowds

Just a four-hour drive south of Bangkok, Pranburi is often skipped in favor of its better-known neighbor, Hua Hin. But for travelers seeking peace and a touch of nature, Pranburi is a revelation. “It’s perfect for families,” Jeremy says. “You can bike through quiet coastal roads, explore lush mangrove forests or simply unwind by the sea.” The area is also home to several dramatic caves, with Phraya Nakhon Cave standing out as a must-see. “There’s a short hike involved, but it’s absolutely worth it,” he adds.

Nan: Northern Soul and Serenity

In the forested hills of northern Thailand, Nan is a soulful alternative to bustling Chiang Mai. This province blends scenic beauty with a deeply rooted sense of culture and tradition. “Nan is all about slow travel,” Jeremy explains. “You’ve got the calm of riverside villages, old wooden homes in the city center and stunning temples like Wat Phumin, famous for its storybook murals.” The nearby districts of Pua and Bo Klua offer a chance to dive deeper into local traditions; Bo Klua, in particular, is known for its historic salt wells still worked by hand.

Khao Sok: A Rainforest You Can Sleep In

Khao Sok offers one of Thailand’s most immersive nature experiences — picture floating bungalows, ancient jungle trails and misty mornings over Cheow Larn Lake. “It’s one of my favorite places to send travelers,” Jeremy says. “There’s a real sense of wonder here, whether you’re canoeing beneath limestone cliffs or listening to gibbons call at dawn.” Located between the Andaman and Gulf coasts, it’s an ideal two-night stop that pairs well with a beach escape in Khao Lak or Koh Samui, depending on the season.

Phatthalung: Where Culture and Nature Dance

Far from the beaten tourist paths, Phatthalung is a soulful slice of southern Thailand that offers something refreshingly authentic. “A sunrise cruise on Thale Noi Lake is unforgettable,” Jeremy says. “You’ll see buffalo wading through water lilies, birds in flight and mirror-like reflections.” The region is also known for its nang talung (shadow puppetry) and krajood weaving. “We often arrange workshops where guests can craft their own beach bag using locally harvested reeds,” Jeremy adds. “It’s meaningful, creative and a great souvenir.”

Islands That Whisper, Not Shout

Koh Kood

“One of the most peaceful islands in Thailand,” says Jeremy. With clear waters, waterfalls and no crowds, it’s ideal for unwinding.

Koh Munork

A private island perfect for disconnecting. “It’s a real escape — just you, the sea and serenity,” he notes.

Koh Lipe

For snorkeling and diving, Koh Lipe shines. Per Jeremy, “It’s small but vibrant, with great food and a laid-back vibe.”

Khanom

Not technically an island, but a coastal hideaway known for rare pink dolphins and quiet beaches. “It’s a place where time slows down,” Jeremy says.

Bonus: Hidden Gems in Bangkok

Most trips to Thailand start in Bangkok. As long as you’re there, take a few days to adjust, explore and dive into these culturally rich experiences.

Muay Thai Masterclass and Ringside Thrill

Step into the fierce, fascinating world of Muay Thai, a traditional form of boxing! Begin at a real boxing camp for a hands-on intro to Thailand’s national sport. Learn kicks, punches and rituals from pro trainers, then visit the iconic Rajadamnern Stadium for exclusive backstage access. Watch fighters prep, feel the electric vibe ringside and snap a photo with the night’s champion. Cap off the evening with a special gift — authentic Muay Thai shorts — and memories of a truly knockout adventure.

A UFO-Like Temple

Far from the typical temple trail, Wat Phra Dhammakaya stuns with its massive, futuristic golden dome, earning it the nickname “the UFO Temple.” Located just north of Bangkok, this colossal complex is one of the largest in the world and famously covered in a million golden Buddha statues. While it’s been the object of some controversy, it remains a jaw-dropping site of immense spiritual gatherings, sometimes drawing more than a million worshippers. Whether you’re intrigued by its scale, design or mystery, this surreal stupa is unlike anything else in Thailand, and worth the detour.
