Accessible only by a lengthy boat ride or a small plane, Tortuguero truly feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere, in the best possible way. As if the excitement of arriving to this sparsely populated area isn’t enough, children will immediately pick up on the kid-friendly atmosphere of Tortuguero, although it’s best suited for kids 8 and up. There are no cars, just boat rides along rivers and bike rides along paths to get around. Tour the national park to see the wildlife here, and consider visiting the local school for an immersive cultural experience. The sea turtles are one of the highlights; four different species call this area home and they nest March through October. For kid-friendly accommodations, think rustic but comfortable, much like the area itself.
