When you picture an idyllic family vacation full of nostalgic charm, miles of sandy coastline and historic beauty, nothing quite compares to summers on Cape Cod. Having visited the Cape throughout my life, returning this year for our toddler’s second annual trip felt like a full-circle moment. But whether you are packing a diaper bag or traveling with teenagers, navigating this busy destination in peak season takes strategy (and a little insider knowledge). Read on for my list of the absolute best things to do in Cape Cod with kids.

Cape Cod with Kids: Best Beaches, Activities & More
Lay of the Land
Cape Cod is made up of four regions and 16 towns, each offering its own personality.
The Upper Cape: Right as you cross the bridge and mostly residential, this historic area offers calm, warm-water beaches along Buzzards Bay. We love visiting the Spohr Gardens in Falmouth; the grounds are breathtaking and so fun to explore.
The Mid Cape: This is the true hub of Cape Cod, packed with mini-golf, seafood shacks, shopping strips and beaches. Pirate’s Cove in Yarmouth is a family tradition for us — it’s the perfect kitschy mini-golf course, complete with caves and waterfalls.
The Lower Cape: Full of refined, historic charm. The hydrangea-lined homes are what summer dreams are made of! Walk or drive down Shore Road in Chatham for beautiful homes along the ocean.
The Outer Cape: Breathtakingly scenic with an eclectic art scene. Truro is unbeatably peaceful, and we found our favorite breakfast sandwich ever at the unassuming Salty Market Farmstand.

Beaches Galore
The Cape’s primary pull is its beautiful beaches. If you’ve never been before, the choices can be overwhelming. To narrow them down, decide if you’re looking for a bay side or a coast side beach as they offer completely different vibes.
Cape Cod Bay Side Beaches
Mellow, great for little explorers and offering massive warm tidal flats at low tide that let you walk hundreds of yards out into the ocean.

Atlantic Ocean Side Beaches
Famous for sweeping sand dunes, dramatic waves perfect for water sports and wide-open shorelines where you can catch beautiful sunrises.

Nauset Light Beach (Eastham)
TIP: During peak season, the beaches and their lots fill up fast. Try to arrive right when they open to secure a spot early, or wait until after hours for a peaceful golden hour beach session.

Laid-Back Family Fun
When you need a break from the sand, the Cape has plenty of classic family experiences. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is perfect for all ages; it’s paved and entirely flat, running about 25 miles from Yarmouth to Wellfleet. Families can rent bikes, hook up trailers for toddlers or enjoy a shady stroll. It was even peaceful enough for our almost-2-year-old to nap in her stroller while we walked for an hour.

Another beautiful way to spend an afternoon is a private charter tour through the harbor to get an up-close look at the seals. This is the perfect stress-free way to enjoy time on the water as a family while taking in the views. Lastly, watching the catch at the Chatham Fish Pier will put a smile on everyone’s face. When the fishing boats return from their morning trips, harbor seals swarm the area hoping for scraps, which is a core memory for toddlers and teens alike.

Once the fishing boats return, transition into exploring the various town centers, where the streets come alive with that quintessential New England charm that we travel there for.
Casual, kid-friendly eats: For a fun dinner, The Dog House in Dennis serves up gourmet hot dogs with creative toppings. Follow that with an ice cream flight from Cape Cod Creamery and sample six different flavors.
Local shopping: Chatham’s Main Street captures that calm, coastal vibe and appeals to all ages. Teens will love shopping at the local boutiques, and little ones will be mesmerized by the treats at Chatham Candy Manor. Don’t forget to stop at Cuffy’s in Dennis to stock up on old-school penny candy and souvenirs.
Catch a movie at the Wellfleet Drive In: To wrap up a long day, cozy up in your car at one of the country’s last drive-in theaters to watch a movie under the stars.

Where to Stay
Finding a home base that balances kid-friendly amenities and family connection is what takes a Cape Cod trip from good to great. Chatham Bars Inn is a picturesque seaside resort with a private beach and oceanfront pool, as well as a kids’ club with complimentary activities — perfect while Mom and Dad enjoy time at the spa or take in the coastal views.
Wequassett Resort & Golf Club is another favorite choice for families, with multi-bedroom cottages, villas and suites that offer private terraces and fireplaces. The children’s center offers a wide array of activities, and furry friends are warmly welcomed — they even get their own concierge playtime service.

Ultimately, what makes Cape Cod so special is its timelessness. It remains one of the rare destinations where the simple pleasures — a scoop of ice cream, a golden hour stroll or a wild seal spotting — come together to make big memories.
