A New Style of Kid-Friendly Hospitality at Portrait Firenze

Portrait Firenze is the newest hotel in the Lungarno Collection, luxury properties throughout Italy owned by the Ferragamo Group. True to the fashion-house ownership, impeccable style is one of Portrait Firenze’s defining features. But don’t let the chic atmosphere mislead you — the property welcomes kids, and the all-suite layout plus the convenient location make it a wonderful spot for families.

A Unique Approach

What makes this property stand out is the unusually personal style of service. There’s no traditional reception desk; instead, arriving guests are seated comfortably in the lounge and served coffee as a staff member checks them in. The same staff member handles baggage and escorts guests to their room. It feels more like an exclusive private residence than a hotel.

The Portrait Firenze team is well managed and professionally trained in every aspect of the guest experience; it’s clear they want guests to be happy from the second they check in. I’ve never before experienced this level of individual attention.

Location

Adjacent to the iconic Ponte Vecchio bridge, Portrait Firenze has an enviable location in the heart of historic Florence. It’s next to the famed shopping street Via Tornabuoni, a stone’s throw from Palazzo Strozzi and the Galleria dell’Accademia, and a short walk across the river to the Boboli Gardens. At the end of a long day of touring, shopping and eating, it’s important to have a place to escape, and Portrait Firenze is a literal oasis. The location also makes for a very easy drive in and out of the city, with quick highway access to Siena, Pisa and other major sights.

Accommodations

The six-story hotel has only 34 suites. There are many options for families, including seven family suites. While these don’t have river views, the positive is that there is less street noise. Some family suites have private terraces that offer great outdoor space for relaxing after a busy day of sightseeing.

We stayed in a Deluxe Portrait Suite with floor-to-ceiling windows, a stunning river view and a fully stocked kitchenette with a microwave and dishwasher. The decor is wonderful, with a subtly sophisticated yet comfortable feel that perfectly represents the Ferragamo name.

Portrait Firenze’s accommodations are a tech-lover’s dream. Each is equipped with a bluetooth audio system that connects easily to guests’ smartphones or other devices, and can be used separately in each bathroom and room. TVs are internet-equipped and WIFI is free. Every suite has an iPad mini loaded with city guides and music.

Dining

Caffè dell’Oro, the onsite restaurant, exudes a glamorous midcentury modern look yet maintains a welcoming atmosphere. It offers all-day dining service, from a lovely breakfast buffet to lunch to aperitifs and gourmet dinners. Room service comes from the same kitchen — families may want to relax in their room and enjoy a delicious spread laid out on crisp white linen on the living room table.

Amenities

Guests with an interest in fashion will enjoy having free access to the Salvatore Ferragamo museum and a discount at Ferragamo men’s and women’s boutiques. Families with older kids can use the complimentary bicycles, and those with younger children can arrange for babysitting through the hotel staff.

The amenities, cordial service and magnificent style do have one downside: You will never want to leave!
