A Tenerife Family Beach Vacation at Abama Golf & Spa Resort

You only need to mention that you are off to ‘The Abama’ hotel to anyone who has been there and you are greeted with envious sighs as they recall their last R&R retreat to the secluded resort tucked away on Tenerife’s west coast. The Abama Golf & Spa Resort is really is one of those places where you can balance ‘me time’ with ‘family time’ and where everyone gets a holiday.

The largest of the Spanish Canary islands, Tenerife is closer to the coast of Africa than to the coast of Spain, which is why it boasts year round sunshine. And, it’s why The Abama is such a draw, particularly to European families looking to escaping their unpredictable climates for a warm pampered break in the sun.

Abama Golf and Spa Resort Review

This resort oozes understated luxury in a beautiful coastal setting. There are a range of accommodation options, ranging from villa suites clustered around pools, to incredibly spacious guest rooms in the main hotel building.

The main hotel sits at the top of the hill and the guest rooms and villas are scattered amongst the resort’s beautiful botanic gardens leading down to the sea. Staff are always on hand to take you around the resort by buggy and some villas come with their own private buggy too.

Activities for Kids and Parents

The main swimming pool has a shore-like edge, perfect for children to splash in and out of, and there are several other pools dotted around the resort, including natural pools carved out of the rocks by the shoreline. A funicular takes you down to the golden crescent-shaped beach, where staff are on hand with towels and water, whilst the Beach Club restaurant stays open until sunset to ensure you need not go far for a meal.

The funky and cleverly designed kids’ club is one of the best equipped I’ve come across, with a large indoor space including soft play area and an outdoor area big enough to contain a game of football that remains shaded most of the day. During peak times a programme of activities runs from morning till night and they will even keep your kids entertained through dinner.

This gives you many opportunities for that ‘me time’ I mentioned. You can have a round of golf, play tennis at the tennis academy, read a book by the serene adults-only pool or unwind in the spa. And the spa here hasn’t been designed as an add on, it has been created to rival some of the world’s finest, with a fantastic hydrotherapy pool, a range of steam rooms, a hammam and a spa treatment menu that will make your mouth water almost as much as the menu at the Michelin starred MB restaurant, one of the 14 eateries on site.

Dining at Abama

To guarantee you get to sample each and every one of these restaurants, it’s advisable to book up even before your arrival. Ranging from casual buffet-style restaurants to sophisticated Japanese and  regional tapas you will never tire of the choice. Also note that not all restaurants are open year round and some do not accept young children, which is when the babysitting service and evening kids club entertainment comes in useful.

Location

There is so much to do on the resort and also so many opportunities to just do nothing, that most guests rarely leave the Abama for the duration of their stay. Nevertheless, the concierge is on hand for those that do want to explore the island’s spectacular volcanic scenery further or perhaps enjoy some of its popular man-made attractions such as the Siam Water park!
