13 Best Family Ski Resorts for 2013

When it comes to skiing, not all years are created equal. Snow conditions, of course, are the biggest variable, although between resort development and equipment upgrades, it feels like there is much more than just weather to track these days. For families planning ski vacations this season, there’s much to be excited about. Resorts are 100% focused on catering to children of all ages and their parents.

I got together with my fellow family travel gurus and we put together our list of the best family ski resorts for 2013. There are so many options and factors for families to consider. Here’s our take:

Add Keystone, Colorado to Winter Family Vacation Bucket List

The great state of Colorado is a skier’s dream with epic conditions, varied terrain, and a long list of ski resort options for all abilities and interests. Selecting the right ski resort for a winter family vacation takes a bit of legwork to ensure it will meet the needs of every person in the family (see How to Find the Best Family-Friendly Ski Resort for my list of critical things to consider).

I visited Keystone, Colorado this month and although it’s still pre-season, I can see why so many families …

An Exquisite Italian Mountain Family Holiday in Summer or Winter

Tucked into the Sarentino Valley in Northern Italy, at 5,321 feet in altitude, is a peaceful mountain retreat, Auener Hof Dining House. They describe themselves as “discreet luxury with a nature-inspired design.” This is exactly how I found Auener Hof to be; guests receive the comfort and warmth of a mountain retreat, while experiencing the simple, personalized pampering that a small…

Back to Ski Week: 10 Ways to Make a Family Ski Trip Less Expensive

Welcome to Back to Ski week! It’s time to think snow — believe it or not — particularly if you want to take advantage of the great pre-season deals and discounts. Practically all of the best family-friendly ski resorts offer incentives to book tickets and/or accommodations early.

Back To Ski Week: Tips for Skiing in Lake Tahoe with Kids

Our good friend Mara Gorman is managing a ridiculously clever “Back to Ski” carnival on her blog Mother of All Trips this week. I kicked off our 2012-13 family ski vacation coverage on Ciao Bambino with my tips for skiing in Europe with kids post in September. Of course, if you live in the US, it’s much less expensive to ski at any one of our glorious ski resorts across the country.

I’m going to join Mara’s skiing with kids celebration with some tips for skiing in Lake Tahoe. I great up skiing in California and look forward to our weekend ski getaways all year long.

Best Places to Ski in New York State with Kids

Whether you’ve taught your kids to ski or not, there is no time like the present to experience one of New York’s many ski areas. January is Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month with some participating resorts also offering specially priced learn-to-ski packages. From now until January 9th, the Ski Areas of New York (SANY) are teaming up to offer 10,000 Lift Tickets for just $10 each to be used for a one-day skiing extravaganza on January 10, 2013.

This is the perfect opportunity to hit the slopes in New York! I Ski NY is also offering a 4th Grade Ski & Ride Passport Program where students can ride free up to three times at each participating ski area.

Best Ski Free Deals for Families this Season

Skiing is one of the best family vacations ever. The only downside is that this beloved sport is expensive. Once you add in lessons, lodging, equipment, and tickets, skiing becomes cost prohibitive for families. Fortunately, family-friendly ski resorts are plentiful and many are doing their best to take the sting out of the cost by offering ‘kids ski free’ deals.

At some resorts, this perk is just for very young children so the benefit is short-lived. While at others like Keystone Resort, Steamboat, Mt. Bachelor, Killington, and Sun Valley, school-age kids get a big break too.

Families Are Royalty at Keystone Resort in Colorado

Big picture, the thrill of skiing with kids can happen at the simplest resort with few amenities, but we are spoiled in North America with all of the excellent family ski resort options offering vastly different experiences. Keystone Resort in Colorado is unique in that it was purpose-built just for skiing. Imagine whiteboarding the “perfect” ski experience and then building the town around it. That’s Keystone.

Family Ski Holiday in Switzerland? Consider Adelboden

Although we were able to ski at epic Swiss ski resorts including Davos, Zermatt, Grindelwald, Verbier, and Crans-Montana during our two years in Switzerland, one of my regrets is that we never got to Adelboden for a family ski holiday. Located at the end of a glorious valley in the Bernese Alps, Adelboden feels remote, yet it is easily accessible from both Zurich and Geneva via car or train.

Family Ski Holidays in Europe: Where Can Kids Ski Free (Part 1)?

I put together our now-annual list of family ski resorts where kids can ski free in the US and Canada a few weeks ago. Now, it’s time for Europe! The good news is a surprising number of resorts offer some kind of ‘kids ski free’ program. The list is so big that I’m breaking it up into two posts. France and Switzerland are the subject today and then I’ll cover Austria, Germany, Andorra, and Italy tomorrow.

In France, only Chamonix has a truly compelling program for older kids where the first child …

Family Ski Holidays in Europe: Where Can Kids Ski Free (Part 2)?

It’s time for part 2 of our report on where kids can ski free in Europe (yesterday we covered Switzerland and France).

I spent the morning calling ski resorts in Austria, Germany, and Italy. Most resorts in these countries offer some kind of free skiing for very young kids.

Family Ski Holidays: Thumbs Up for Catered Ski Chalets

Does an upscale catered ski chalet in a fantastic family-friendly ski resort complete with ski-out lift access, daily childcare, and inclusive meals sound too good to be true?

It’s not!

We just finished our holiday ski vacation at Les Gets in the French Alps. After hours and hours of research, I concluded that a hotel for 4 adults and 3 kids was too expensive over the holiday peak period, not to mention too confining for a group.

Family Ski Trip Deals: Discounted Lift Ticket Resources

Since lift tickets are part of what makes skiing so expensive (not to mention clothes, equipment, overpriced meals, and lodging) – I was excited to read about a few websites specializing in discounted lift tickets and spent some time …

Family Ski Vacations: Kids’ Lesson and Childcare Round Up

Even if you go to a resort where kids ski free, family ski vacations are expensive. Skiing is also a lot of work. But done right, the payoff is huge when every member of the family is active and having fun.

The better the amenities and facilities, the better the experience (see our article on how to choose the best family-friendly ski areas). A good kids’ ski program is essential.

Family Travel Tips: Skiing in Europe with Kids

One of the best parts about living in Switzerland was our easy access to the best skiing in Europe. And yes, I do think it’s worth the time and expense to travel across an ocean for a family ski holiday. Ski experiences vary greatly from country to country and just like any travel adventure, the fun is in understanding and appreciating a different approach to this beloved winter sport.

Dreaming about a ski trip to Europe this season? It’s not too late! Here’s what you need to know:

Family-Friendly Recipes for Ski Weekends

During my last ski trip over President’s Day weekend, it dawned on my that one of the issues we always face when we rent a home or condo is what to cook for dinner. After a full day of skiing and/or ski school, expecting kids to sit through a restaurant meal is a recipe for disaster.

Regardless if you spend the day on the slopes, the logistics alone of getting your kids and their stuff to ski school means elaborate meals if any kind are totally unappealing. Add in the fact that your favorite ski …

Family-Friendly Skiing at Steamboat

Before my 2010 ski season came to an abrupt end on Valentine’s Day (no fun sledding accident), my plan was to scout a few new ski venues by following my own advice from my how to find family-friendly ski resorts post. The good news is that I made it to Steamboat, Colorado before my luck changed.

It’s been ski week so far on CB with the best family ski resorts in Europe post and family-friendly recipes for ski weekends by Amanda Haas yesterday.

How to Find the Best Family-Friendly Ski Resorts

Skiing is a wonderful family activity. Expense aside, it is a sport that all ages and genders enjoy, and when kids are old enough, families will appreciate the time spent on vacation together—versus a pool or beach environment where everyone may be doing their own thing.

Qualifying what makes a resort great for families is important since terrain, facilities, and amenities vary widely.

Sun Valley is easy to love. It takes just one family ski trip to appreciate its advantages and the reasons why their guest return rate is so high.

Kids Ski Free at Keystone Resort this Season!

As if you needed one more reason to head to family-friendly Keystone Resort in Colorado for the 2012-13 ski season …Vail Resorts recently announced that all children years old and under can ski and snowboard every day for free. There’s no cap on the number of children included per family and no black out dates, including ALL weekends and holidays!

Kids’ Ski School Best Practices

If you want your kids to learn to ski, you can teach them yourself (good luck with that!) or send them to ski school. A comprehensive program run by a thoughtful expert makes all the difference in the world.

A model for this is Mammoth Mountain Ski Area’s Ski & Snowboard School in Califorinia. Craig Albright is the Managing Director of their program. I recently e-interviewed him for his insight on kids’ ski school best practices.

Kids’ Ski School Spotlight: Keystone Resort

The phenomenal Kids’ Ski & Ride School at Keystone Resort is one of the things that makes this Colorado ski resort one of the best family ski destinations in the country. The Keystone team has put significant thought and resources behind a program that ensures learning to ski and snowboard is fun for all ages and that kids develop best practices from day one on the slopes.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Fred Rumford, Keystone’s Ski & Ride School Director, and learned why …

Kids’ Ski School Spotlight: Park City Mountain Resort

It’s not uncommon to watch a kids’ ski school lesson where the instructor(s) spend more time corralling kids than actually teaching them new skills. This is inevitable in larger group lessons where individual skills are likely to vary greatly. What if your kids were guaranteed a lesson with no more than five kids as part of the standard ski school program … Sound too good to be true? It’s not.

This is exactly what Park City Mountain Resort …

Kids’ Ski School Spotlight: Sun Valley SnowSports School

For our new 2013 Ski School Spotlight series, I interviewed Ski School Directors from top family resorts to highlight need-to-know program details. I’ve covered Park City Mountain Resort and Keystone Resort so far; today’s featured ski area, Sun Valley Resort in Idaho, will be our last spotlight of the season.

Navigating Skiing in Davos-Klosters with Kids

When many people hear the name Davos, the first thing they think of is the World Economic Forum, while Klosters evokes thoughts of Prince Charles and his annual ski trip. That’s all I knew before last week …

The full story is that Davos Klosters is a multi-faceted mountain resort (one of the oldest in Switzerland) in the heart of the Swiss Alps with 700+ km of hiking trails in the summer and 300+ km of ski slopes in the winter. We spent a weekend here this month and got a first-hand look at all it has to offer for my Skiing in Europe with Kids’ series.

Navigating Skiing in Grindelwald with Kids

Navigating a ski resort in Europe is not an intuitive experience. Many of the resort areas are vast and comprised of multiple ski areas within a single destination. Language barriers create additional complexity.

Last week’s Photo Friday post featured Grindelwald in the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland. Grindelwald is a stunning winter destination and the ultimate Swiss Alps ski experience. Due diligence, however, is required to ensure you experience more pleasure than pain. It’s worth it!

Navigating Skiing in Verbier with Kids

Verbier is one of the most famous ski resorts in Switzerland. It’s not particularly well known as a kid-friendly mecca, but plenty of families choose to ski and vacation here to experience the tremendous on and off-piste ski terrain.

This post is part of my navigating European ski resorts with kids’ series. We’re taking advantage of the terrific conditions this season to hit a variety of resorts. So far, I’ve covered Grindelwald and Zermatt in depth; each of these resorts has its own distinct resort personality.

Navigating Skiing in Zermatt with Kids

If you’re dreaming of an incredible Swiss ski experience, Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn, delivers. Insane mountain scenery paired with an old-style European village transport visitors to a winter paradise.

Winter and summer months alike, I always urge friends and family enjoying Swiss vacations to experience Zermatt, at least for a night or two. Located just a few hours via car or train from both Geneva and Zurich, Zermatt is surprisingly easy to access given the remote location.

Ski on Top of the World in Val Thorens, France

Driving to Val Thorens in the French Alps is an adventure as it involves a non-stop steep climb up the side of a mountain for an hour. On arrival you feel like you’ve just reached the top of the world. True statement. Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe at 2,300 meters (7, 545 feet). It’s also part of Les 3 (Trois) Vallées, the largest ski area anywhere offering 600 kilometers of interconnected slopes. Like most of the big brand ski areas in Europe where navigating logistics is overwhelming, insider perspective is key.

Ski Season is Coming! Resort at Squaw Creek Review

It’s time to start thinking about ski season and to get accommodations booked, particularly for longer stays and popular ski weekends. Lake Tahoe is 3-4 hour drive from the San Francisco Bay Area (provided you choose your departure times judiciously to avoid peak periods).

I have a soft spot for the North Lake Tahoe area as I grew up skiing here …

After moving to warmer climates and taking a twenty year hiatus from winter activities it’s nostalgic and exciting to see my family dive into all that winter has to offer. Resort at Squaw Creek is a convenient lodging choice for families and complements a Squaw Valley family ski trip well because it offers so many on-property winter activities.

Skiing at Stowe Vermont with Kids

Stowe, the self-proclaimed “Ski Capital of the East” is a fabulous destination for families who love to ski or want to learn to ski. In my opinion it’s the closest thing you’ll find to west coast skiing on the east coast.

Stowe boasts the highest vertical elevation in the state of Vermont. Skiing at Stowe offers the chance to ski two mountains, Spruce Peak and Mt. Mansfield. The services offered are comparable to those you find in some of the tonier ski resorts out west, complimentary lockers, overnight ski storage, a high speed gondola

Skiing in Lake Tahoe with Kids

I recently wrote an article for our friends at Shermans Travel highlighting three family favorite ski areas in North Lake Tahoe: Sugar Bowl, Northstar-at-Tahoe, and Squaw Valley. Each of these resorts offers a very different ski experience. The beauty is they are located close enough together that you can easily try all three ski areas in a single vacation.

Skiing in the Italian Dolomites with Kids

The mountain scenery in the Dolomites, located in the northern Italian Alps, is off-the-charts spectacular. If there’s a place where “skiing isn’t just skiing” and the trek to get there is worth the time and expense, this is it. UNESCO-protected, the region’s distinctive limestone cliffs are the backdrop for over 1,200km of pistes, including the unbelievable 36km Sella Ronda loop that can be covered in a single — very focused — ski day.

We spent our ski break here last winter and discovered the Dolomites is a family ski holiday …

Skiing Mountains Not Runs in Switzerland for Photo Friday

When you ski in the Alps, you’re skiing mountains not runs. The sense of open space is incredible and one of the things that makes skiing in Switzerland so epic.

Here’s a shot of our 9-year-old Devon skiing in Grindelwald, Switzerland last weekend. Believe it or not, this was taken on a bluebird Saturday, i.e. where are the other people?

Skiing with Kids in Colorado, Tips from a Local

When you live outside Colorado, planning a ski trip to go there is intimidating. There are simply too many options. Moreover, deciphering where to go with kids is a challenge. Skiing is so popular with families that every resort ’says’ they have great facilities and programs for kids.

I decided to get the real scoop from a local. Kara Williams lives in Carbondale, CO with her husband and kids (7 and 9). She is the co-publisher of The Vacation Gals and is an amazing resource and travel writer.

Spring Visit to Squaw Valley with Kids

I live about four hours from some of the best skiing in the country, maybe even the world, and I can’t tell you the last time I was on skis. Sad. I used to ski. When my husband and I first started dating, he actually taught me how to ski. There were some lessons thrown in there too, but for the most part I learned while trying to keep up with him.

Then I got pregnant, had a baby and got pregnant again. Skiing …

Three Very Good Reasons to Ski in Park City with Kids

After skiing at 18 ski resorts in 4 countries as a family, I have a pretty good idea what makes or breaks a family ski vacation. We gave Park City, Utah, a test drive last weekend and the experience wowed us in every way. In 2012, Ski Magazine included all three of the ski areas in Park City – Canyons Resort, Park City Mountain Resort, and Deer Valley Resort – on their top 10 list. After skiing at each one of them, I get it. Luckily for families, this top rating extends to parents and children of all ages.

Tips for Planning the Best Family Ski Vacation

Planning a family ski vacation is a daunting task given the sheer number of ski destinations. While some are more kid-friendly than others, skiing is an family sport and most ski areas cater to them in one way or another. The planning challenge isn’t identifying family-friendly ski areas, it’s choosing between the long list of seemingly good—i.e. overwhelming—options.

Top Family-Friendly Ski Resorts in Europe

Europe offers a huge amount of variety and choice for family skiers; there really is something for everyone. Essentially accommodation choices come down to three main categories; self-catering, hotels or catered chalets. All can work well for families if you do you research and between them they cover all budgets.

Picking just five European resorts that work well for families is hard, but we think this selection represents some of the best options on offer.

Where Can Kids Ski Free in 2010?

A few weeks ago I wrote a post on finding family-friendly ski resorts and promised to follow up with a list of ski areas offering kids ski free programs. Choosing venues where kids ski free is a great way to take the edge of the exorbitant cost of skiing. I scoured the web for options in North America. Stay tuned for a ski Europe edition.

Where Can Kids Ski Free in 2011?

Many of the top-rated family-friendly ski resorts across the US and Canada offer kids ski and/or stay free programs for families with young children. This is a great way to cut some of the brutal expense out of skiing with kids.

We published a Where Can Kids Ski Free in 2010 list last year and it was so popular that I just updated it with 2011 promotions. Good news …

Why Ski in Crans-Montana with Kids?

My skiing in Europe with kids’ series continues this week with a review of Crans-Montana resort in the Valais region of the Swiss Alps.

Those who know about the adjacent ski resorts of Crans and Montana — known together as Crans-Montana — rave about the holiday experience. It’s not a well-recognized international Swiss ski brand like Zermatt or Verbier. Despite this fact, Crans-Montana is not a second-tier ski destination. The opposite is true as the combined resorts have 140 km of skiing available …

Why Spring is a Great Time to Ski at Keystone Resort

Ciao Bambino readers know from previous articles over the years that we love Colorado’s Keystone Resort with kids. For families who don’t want to ski in the more extreme cold conditions of the winter months, spring is the ideal season to head to Keystone. Warmer weather, hours of sunshine, and plenty of soft snow make a spring ski vacation enjoyable on and off the slopes. Spring Skiing with Kids…
