Best known for the Panama Canal, Panama is the middle child among Central America’s popular vacation destinations like Costa Rica and Belize. Families looking for off-the-beaten-path experiences at the beach and in the rainforest head to the kid-friendly Caribbean waters of Bocas del Toro and the Pearl Islands. The more adventurous can check out the highlands area of Panama near Boquete for ziplining, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, mountain climbing and a search for the elusive quetzal. Spend the first night or two in a boutique property in Panama City and visit the canal nearby.
