Hotel Adler Thermae: A Kid-Friendly Spa Hotel in Tuscany

I only know of one hotel in all of Tuscany that offers a proper supervised kids’ club with a dedicated facility, instructors, and full activity schedule: Hotel Adler Thermae in Bagno Vignoni. The reason this amenity is rare is that parents don’t really seek out kids’ club facilities while traveling in Tuscany with kids as there is so much to see and do together. Adler Thermae, however, is the exception, as it offers a wonderful thermal spa and wellness center, i.e. parents have good reason to make use of childcare.

Traditional Hotel Set Up, Not Apartments

One of the things that make Italy so great with kids is that there are a plethora of rural resort properties offering villa and/or apartments with amenities families appreciate like full kitchens and loads of living space to spread out. This is our most popular accommodation category in Italy. See the “resorts” category in our Italy Family Hotel Portfolio to access Ciao Bambino’s thoroughly vetted recommendations.

For this reason, I recommend Hotel Adler Thermae as a three to five night getaway for European-based families who can access Tuscany easily by air, or alternatively, as a few-night stop in longer itineraries for families who want to experience the area or indulge in a renown Italian spa hotel.

Val D'Orcia Italy

Located in UNESCO-Protected Val D’Orcia

Hotel Adler Thermae is located in the UNESCO-protected Val D’Orcia region, just on the border with Umbria in southern Tuscany. This region is one of the most beautiful places in Italy with one-of-a-kind scenery created by the pairing of barren, stark hills with villages and agricultural estates intricately woven into the landscape. It’s one of the most photographed regions in Italy.

Pienza, Montalcino, Montepulciano, and Siena are all within an hour’s drive of Hotel Alder Thermae. And if you stay anywhere in this area, a stop at the tiny hamlet of Montichiello for lunch at Osteria La Porta is a must; ask for a table on their panoramic terrace with a magnificent view of Pienza in the distance.

Kids’ yoga is one of many activities offered at the Aki Kids Club for ages 4 and up

Aki Kids Club

We’ve had many clients stay at Adler Thermae over the years and rave about the Aki Kids Club for ages 4 and up. We spent the day there last summer with another family and the kids (ages 6, 8, and 9) loved their experience. The program includes swimming in the thermal pools, games, crafts, and even yoga.

The best part is that Adler Thermae attracts Italian families, as well as guests from all over the world, so taking part in the kids’ club is like spending time at United Nations of children. Very fun!

The AKI Kids Club is open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.30a – 11p and on Thursday and Sunday from 2p – 11p. Note, that the nighttime hours enable parents to have their own dinner out, either on the property or at a nearby village.

Spa and Thermal pools

Adler Thermae is home to a large spa with an extensive list of treatments from Thalasso to Vinotherapy, to holistic medicine, to weight loss programs. See the Spa & Beauty list on the website for details. I toured the spa and had a lovely facial, but can’t give much commentary here other than to say that Adler Thermae is famous for it’s healing spa water and treatments. Our clients have never had anything but positive experiences to report this spa.

The 1000 meter indoor and outdoor swimming pools are stunning and filled with water from Bagno Vignoni’s ancient sources. There’s also a freshwater lap pool, children’s fun pool, and salt water grotto. The pools are open year-round. There’s also an expansive grass and garden area well-suited for wee legs and running around.

Adler Thermae Tuscany Guest Rooms
Adler Thermae has rooms just for families with separate areas for sleeping

Adler Thermae Rooms

Adler Thermae was purpose-built as a hotel and as a consequence offers guests traditional Double and Twin Rooms, as well as Family Junior Suites and Family Suites. Rooms are upscale and updated, but are not stylish or special.

For me, this aspect of the resort is the main trade-off. Adler Thermae is a modern hotel, not a centuries-old farmhouse or hamlet that has been converted into a boutique accommodation like most of the Tuscany accommodations we feature on Ciao Bambino. But if offers something unique to families that you can’t find at other properties, so from that perspective, it’s worth integrating into an itinerary.

Pricing

Adler Thermae is not inexpensive. They offer guests a state-of-the-art spa facility, extensive grounds, and upscale amenities and charge accordingly. There are seasonal packages and specials available, and they will do bed and breakfast rates on request.

Rates vary greatly. The best thing to do is to use our booking service to ask for a custom quote and we’ll ensure you get the best package as our clients book quite a few rooms here.
