If you are still toying with the idea of a quick holiday getaway, it’s not too late to put something together – many hotels still have rooms available and are offering discounts and packages as incentives to fill rooms.
Flying over the holidays can be a hideous and expensive experience – driving is key to keeping costs and hassle to a minimum. Clearly what is drivable for one family may not be for another, however, for those that can get to the West Coast easily, the beauty of California is the number of diverse and fun places to visit that are a car ride (or an inexpensive flight) away.
Here are some ideas for quick getaways:
San Diego: During any season there are fun things to do in San Diego since there are so many amusement parks and kid-friendly activities in this area. Plus some hotels have heated outdoor pools that are open year-round like La Costa Resort and Spa. Amenities here include extensive kids-oriented programs and facilities for ages 6 months and up. The hotel is offering discounts from 10-30% over the holidays.
San Francisco: Ironically, summer can be freezing with fog in San Francisco while other months are clear and sunny. December can be rainy, but there are plenty of indoor sights to explore including the new aquarium and science museum. Hotel Del Sol is affordable and located in the perfect spot to easily get around on foot or using public transportation. The hotel is offering discounts of 15-30% over the holidays.
Lake Tahoe: Skiing is a favorite activity for parents and kids alike. If you can travel right before or after the period between Christmas and New Years, rooms are available. The cost of ski tickets adds up fast so the current ski package offer at the Marriott Timber Lodge (at the base of Heavenly Valley) – up to a 40% discount off 3 and 7-night package rates including free ski passes – definitely takes the edge off. Packages are valid for stays between January 4 and April 5, 2009. Reservations made prior to December 18th receive an extra 10% rate reduction.
Every Ciao Bambino property page has a Check Availability button where requests are sent directly to the hotel and the latest room options, promotions, and pricing are always offered.

We’re working with our suppliers on being flexible with their booking conditions, and enabling families to postpone travel to a later date without a penalty, when possible. Likewise, given the unpredictability around destinations that may be impacted in the future, we’re helping clients planning new trips and understand ways that they can protect themselves until the situation improves. We are ready to help our clients work through questions and concerns.
