New Kid-Friendly Boutique Hotel in St. Moritz

St. Moritz is one of the world’s iconic ski destinations for glitz and luxury. Although it can be entertaining to check out all the glam shops, hotels, and restaurants for a stroll or dinner, with young kids it can be more relaxing to be in a lower key atmosphere where you aren’t consistently aware of how everyone is behaving.

I actually found St. Moritz, the destination, to have much more going for it than just the luxe factor (more on that later) … in the meantime, hello Nira Alpina.

Something Different at Nira Alpina

Hotel Nira Alpina opened this ski season for the first time. Luxury Travel Mom, Kim-Marie Evans, brought it to my attention on Twitter.  I took one look at their website and I knew immediately I had to check it out.

Although there are piles of upscale accommodations in Switzerland (3-star hotels here are really 4-star equivalent for quality), a precious few are fresh, fun, and modern. I was so excited to find The Cambrian last year in Adelboden for this very reason.  Nira Alpina inspires this same level of excitement.

Nira Alpina offers something different than the usual suspects, a laid back atmosphere that is luxurious, but not stuffy. The design is not just modern, but laugh-out-loud fun.

The interior is chic but comfortable. From couples to small groups to families, they host a variety of guests who all fit into the unpretentious setting with ease.

Kid-Friendly Amenities

Interestingly, Nira Alpina didn’t intend to offer dedicated kid-friendly amenities.  We had dinner with Kai Ulrich, the General Manager, and learned that families started showing up in droves after they opened somewhat unexpectedly.

This makes perfect sense to me — families have been dying for a hotel in St. Moritz just like this where they can be pampered in a comfortable atmosphere with kids.

As a result, the family program at Nira Alpina is still in progress, but they’ve already put together a kids’ club for peak holiday periods. The winter program will be optimized for young kids who are not skiing, while their summer program will be activity-focused so kids can take advantage of the glorious outdoor setting while their parents get some down time too. There’s a full spa with a wonderful jet pool that has kids’ hours.

The restaurants at Nira Alpina are a highlight.  Given that this is a small hotel with just 70 rooms, they have a number of fabulous options including a bistro, bakery, a traditional Swiss restaurant, and their main fusion restaurant, Stars. All their dining venues offer a kids’ menu.

Rooms are bright and spacious with a few options for families including connecting rooms. The Alpina Junior Suite sleeps families using a clever single bed that comes out of the wall so it’s not in the way when not in use. These rooms also include private balconies with stunning views. Meanwhile, parents have a separate sleeping area.

Location

Nira Alpina is ideally located in Silvaplana just a few minutes drive from St. Moritz. A skier’s dream, the hotel is literally connected to the main cable car at the Corvatsch ski area which brings you up to the highest point in the ski region at 3,300 meters. For kids, Nira Alpina is ski-out to to a gentle slope and button lift. All the hassle in skiing with kids evaporates when you don’t have to schlep ski equipment.

In summer, the hotel opens right out to the stunning mountain setting. Nira Alpina also offers a complimentary shuttle into town.
