What most surprised me about my visit to the Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza was how much I loved exploring downtown Los Angeles with my kids. In the past, Los Angeles had a reputation of being a city without a “heart” because the downtown area wasn’t developed enough to attract Angelinos and tourists. Today however, downtown is vibrant. History, architecture, and ethnic neighborhoods mix with modern art and exciting attractions. Here’s my list of the top kid-friendly activities in downtown Los Angeles:
The Wild Animal Park in San Diego has a new name, Safari Park. This rebranding sets the perfect tone for experiencing the park as unlike traditional zoos, the park is set up like a safari with expansive enclosures, letting the animals roam as if on a game preserve.
Like going on safari, there are many ways that you can enhance your visit to the park. You can simple visit for the day …
Amsterdam, with its famous canals and gable-roofed buildings, is on of Europe’s most picturesque cities.
Flat, small and easy to navigate on foot, Amsterdam is home to numerous parks, attractions and boasts more museums per capita than any other European capital. All of these attributes make it a great destination for a few-night stay with kids.
My research for our latest DC adventure began a month ago. Exploring Washington DC with kids is simply better with a plan. I’m all for winging it when traveling, but the amount of time spent on your feet while touring DC can easily turn a good trip into a bad one.
However, with a little pre-trip work, you can organize what you want to see by general location and manage the distance you need to walk. Remember that most sites also require you to be …
Sydney is a truly enjoyable place to visit. From the sweeping views of the famous harbor with the iconic Opera House on show to the many great restaurants, a long list of fun family activities and—my favorite—varied and excellent beaches.
Bondi Beach: Our morning at Bondi Beach was the high point of the trip for my boys. Bondi can get very busy on the weekends, so we planned to have our surfing lessons with …
I’m always happy to write about San Diego because it’s simply the perfect family vacation spot. I just wrote an article for Shermans Travel with an updated list of the top kid-friendly activities in and around the San Diego area, including a few of my favorite kid-friendly restaurants (I grew up in Del Mar).
The beauty of San Diego is the ability to balance swimming time with structured activities that are both fun and educational.
One visit to Portland and you’ll understand why it’s called the America’s most livable city. With its parks, festivals, waterfront and friendly demeanor, Portland has no peer.
The Rose City is a perfect hub for a family with active children and teens: in little more than an hour’s drive, my son and daughter could be skiing Mt. Hood, playing on the beach, or boating in a river. Within Portland city limits, we can hike on dense forest trails, go paddling in a kayak under Portland’s famous bridges or pedal along a floating walkway.
When the snow and cold hit, Midwesterners can find themselves looking for ways to avoid the tedium of long days in the house. These are some great activities that can alleviate winter boredom.
1. Talk to the animals. Yes, even in the winter months, most zoos are still open. During the holiday season, check out a Zoolights …
Even though our visit to Sydney was without kids, we did not want to miss the world famous Taronga Zoo. Despite the rainy weather, we had a blast…
Seattle’s walkable urban areas, beautiful natural setting, and laid back atmosphere make it a great vacation destination for anyone, but you might be surprised to learn how accommodating the city is for kids. Seattle’s major sites (and some of its most popular restaurants) are just as much fun for kids as they are adults, and many popular activities seem tailor made for kids.
