We had a tremendous family ski trip to Keystone this winter. This award-winning Colorado ski resort offers families optimal terrain and accommodations, an exceptional Keystone kids’ ski school program, as well as off-mountain fun for all ages.
Keystone also offers fantastic parents-only perks including the spa at the Keystone Lodge and a dinner worthy of a very special date night at the historic Ski Tip Lodge.
Although we were able to ski at epic Swiss ski resorts including Davos, Zermatt, Grindelwald, Verbier, and Crans-Montana during our two years in Switzerland, one of my regrets is that we never got to Adelboden for a family ski holiday. Located at the end of a glorious valley in the Bernese Alps, Adelboden feels remote, yet it is easily accessible from both Zurich and Geneva via car or train.
If you live in Europe or are there for a trip without kids this winter, a two-night getaway to Whitepod, an eco-luxury hotel in Switzerland, is the ultimate romantic escape. 40 geodesic tents (pods) perched over a valley overlook fantastic Alpine scenery. It’s definitely glamping – not camping – as each pod includes a wood stove, a cozy bed, and a complete bathroom. The tent stays toasty but one parent must stoke the fire all night long. Part of the fun!
The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe has been in our USA best family hotels portfolio for a few years now. It was originally reviewed as a Community Recommended property. Although I know the Hyatt is wonderfully located in Incline Village, I never considered staying there over our usual haunts in and around Tahoe City.
I jumped on the chance to stay there a few weeks ago; as Dana just reaffirmed, fall is a tremendous time in Lake Tahoe with gorgeous weather and few crowds.
Our good friend Mara Gorman is managing a ridiculously clever “Back to Ski” carnival on her blog Mother of All Trips this week. I kicked off our 2012-13 family ski vacation coverage on Ciao Bambino with my tips for skiing in Europe with kids post in September. Of course, if you live in the US, it’s much less expensive to ski at any one of our glorious ski resorts across the country.
I’m going to join Mara’s skiing with kids celebration with some tips for skiing in Lake Tahoe. I great up skiing in California and look forward to our weekend ski getaways all year long.
In a jet set resort town like Zermatt, finding luxury hotels is not an issue. Uncovering the very select few properties that cater to families in a meaningful way, however, is much more challenging. After experiencing the 165-room Hotel Mont Cervin Palace this winter, I’ll be adding it to our Ciao Bambino’s Switzerland kid-friendly accommodations portfolio in the next few weeks. This old-school hotel icon is an exceptional place for families.
Part of the prestigious Seiler Hotels Group, the Mont Cervin Palace has been hosting guests for over 150 years …
Squaw Valley has Olympic history; it hosted the 1960 winter Olympics and is the home mountain of Olympic gold medalist Jonny Moseley who is now a spokesperson for the ski resort. It also has a reputation for extreme skiing.
What you may not know is that Squaw Valley is transforming itself to appeal to a larger audience; beginner and intermediates skiers, foodies and families take note – there is more here for you now.
Verbier is one of the most famous ski resorts in Switzerland. It’s not particularly well known as a kid-friendly mecca, but plenty of families choose to ski and vacation here to experience the tremendous on and off-piste ski terrain.
This post is part of my navigating European ski resorts with kids’ series. We’re taking advantage of the terrific conditions this season to hit a variety of resorts. So far, I’ve covered Grindelwald and Zermatt in depth; each of these resorts has its own distinct resort personality.
If you want your kids to learn to ski, you can teach them yourself (good luck with that!) or send them to ski school. A comprehensive program run by a thoughtful expert makes all the difference in the world.
A model for this is Mammoth Mountain Ski Area’s Ski & Snowboard School in Califorinia. Craig Albright is the Managing Director of their program. I recently e-interviewed him for his insight on kids’ ski school best practices.
If you’re dreaming of an incredible Swiss ski experience, Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn, delivers. Insane mountain scenery paired with an old-style European village transport visitors to a winter paradise.
Winter and summer months alike, I always urge friends and family enjoying Swiss vacations to experience Zermatt, at least for a night or two. Located just a few hours via car or train from both Geneva and Zurich, Zermatt is surprisingly easy to access given the remote location.
