Every time I jump on a plane with my kids I learn more about them. Maybe even understand them a little better. It’s part of the beauty of travel. But the fun isn’t limited to airport departure and arrival gates. The weeks and sometime months spent planning the trip is an adventure in its own right. The more involved the kids are, the more excited they get.
And though I’d never admit it to my girls, the more they help plan activities on vacations, the more they learn.
For many, the holidays mean travel. Making the trek to family on the other side of the country, escaping to a beach in Mexico, or skiing. Spending the holiday somewhere special has its perks, but my family does an amazing amount of excursions over the weekends leading up to (and after) Christmas and New Year’s.
We may not be hopping on and off of planes, but we’re definitely hitting the road to take advantage of the whirlwind of great “holiday things” on the calendar.
Something about the image of skaters conjures up that holiday feeling. As winter begins, skating outdoors is accessible even in the most unlikely places. Cities all over the world feature wonderful rinks to help get families in the holiday spirit.
Last year on our spring family vacation, I noticed the rink in Philadelphia’s center and it got me thinking about all the great outdoor rinks that offer this fun winter activity.
