One Aldwych London: Vibrant Design in an Edwardian Icon

One Aldwych in London will always hold a special place in my heart, as it was the venue for the first stop of our whirlwind honeymoon 17 years ago! It was fun to revisit this beloved boutique hotel with my parent lens on — it’s one of those properties that appeals to all travelers with its bold design, vibrant lobby lounge that attracts locals and tourists alike, and phenomenal central location on the Strand.

Although One Aldwych has catered to happy guests for 18 years now, it’s not relying on its reputation to bring new clients. Instead, the property is investing in providing a unique London experience to today’s traveler. Here’s a look what the hotel offers families in 2016 and beyond:

Family-Friendly Review of One Aldwych

One Aldwych is housed in an iconic Edwardian building right on a corner of the Strand, and walking in and out of the stately architecture is part of the fun. The buzz of the theater district enhances the mood and, notably, The Lion King — which, I’d argue, is one of the best musicals on the planet — is right next door. Reason enough to stay here!

Heart of One Aldwych: The Lobby Lounge

The Lobby Bar at One Aldwych is the heart of the hotel, and was and is one of the best places in London to get a pre- or post-theater cocktail. Soaring floor-to-ceiling windows, eye-catching modern art and a decadent flower arrangement create the dramatic ambiance. Although visiting a bar, of course, is not really a kid-friendly activity, this one is convivial and bright enough that there are parents with strollers and older kids alike popping in for a nibble and a taste of one of their dreamy craft cocktails.

For something more kid-friendly, One Aldwych offers a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-themed tea, served in this grand space daily.

Array of Spacious Rooms for Families

One Aldwych offers a wonderful array of rooms for families, including suites with kitchenette facilities that have separate living rooms, as well as six connecting rooms. Two-bedroom suites work wonderfully for families. Best of all, One Aldwych offers a Kids Stay For Free package where the kids’ room is free of charge during some periods.

Accommodations at One Aldwych are simply decorated with a modern feel and are quite comfortable. Rooms are light and bright with large windows.

Onsite Dining

In addition to the lively lounge, One Aldwych has two exciting dining outlets. Indigo offers casual dining in an open-air loft overlooking the lobby. Amazingly, the cutting-edge menu is entirely gluten- and dairy-free … yet delicious! Entrees are fresh and sophisticated; hand-rolled gnocchi and cured salmon with avocado and coriander were two of our favorites. It’s amazing how you don’t miss ingredients when meals are constructed so well.

Eneko isn’t open yet, but will be a Basque restaurant by the Michelin-starred chef Eneko Atxa.

All outlets and room service offer a kids’ menu.

Chlorine-Free Swimming in the Health Club

We love city hotels with swimming pools! The chlorine-free pool at One Aldwych is indoors with cool blue lighting and underwater music.

There’s an adjacent gym with an array of the latest equipment. The spa is not elaborate but offers all of the face and body fundamentals, including facials, body treatments and manicures/pedicures.

Attentive and Friendly Service

The service at One Aldwych is an integral part of the enjoyable experience. Smiling faces greet guests from moment one when they walk in the door. Despite the imposing and grand exterior, there’s nothing pretentious about the atmosphere and service. Service is attentive but not intrusive, and friendly without formality.
